Click the Add... button to add font suitcase files to the Font Suitcase Files list.
Select files in the list with the mouse, or choose Select All from the Edit menu. To select multiple files, drag through their names; or press the Shift key while clicking on files to be added to the selection. The Shift key causes files that are clicked to reverse their selection status, so you can de-select a selected file by Shift-clicking it.
Selected files can be removed from the list by choosing Clear from the Edit menu, or by pressing the BackSpace or Delete key.
Click the Check/Fix button to check selected files for structural defects and fix them if defective.
Click the Harmonize button to harmonize selected files.
Font suitcase files which are open (including open by Suitcase II) or which are locked or on locked disks cannot be processed; if any such files are selected when you click Check/Fix or Harmonize, Font Harmony will warn you that they will be ignored. Use the Suitcase II desk accessory to close any font files that you want to Harmonize; after you Check/Fix and Harmonize them you can use the Suitcase II desk accessory again to re-open the files.
Font Harmony assumes that all members of a font family are in the same font file — a family is comprised of all sizes and styles of a typeface. It is up to you to assure that this condition is met before you Harmonize. If necessary, use Font/DA Mover to put all members of each family into one (and only one) file.
Harmonize changes font numbers in a file if necessary to avoid conflict with font numbers of fonts that are in other files in the Font Suitcase Files list or in the System. This allows you to have any or all of the harmonized files in use simultaneously with Suitcase II without fear of conflicting font numbers. Because most applications “remember” fonts by number, conflicting font numbers can cause wrong typefaces to appear on the screen or printer.
Font Harmony sometimes has to change font numbers to avoid number conflicts. Because Harmonize might change font numbers, you may not want to Harmonize font suitcase files containing fonts that are in use in your existing documents. Still, you would add those font suitcase files to the Font Suitcase Files list so that Font Harmony will know what font numbers are used in those files while it is Harmonizing the selected files. In other words, any files in the list that are not selected when you click the Harmonize button serve as part of the context for Harmonizing the selected files, even though the unselected files are not changed in any way. The System file is always part of the context, but it is never changed by Font Harmony.
To minimize (but not eliminate) the chance of font numbers being changed in certain files, you can first Harmonize all files except those, and then Harmonize those files.
To be sure there are no conflicts among the font suitcase files you use, you should Harmonize all of them. If you see the wrong font(s) when you open or print the your documents, you can re-specify the typeface(s). We suggest that you Harmonize font suitcase files even if they contain fonts used in existing documents, unless re-specifying the typeface(s) would be too laborious.
Files which are changed by Harmonize may be changed in such a way that makes them incompatible with the Macintosh 128K and 512K, and incompatible with Font/DA Mover versions earlier than 3.8. Fileswill be changed in this way if styled font families are merged into the associated main family. Such merging is optional — after closing this window you can choose Options from the Options menu and then click Help for more information. So use only Font/DA Mover 3.8 or later with harmonized font files, and use the files only on a Macintosh 512E, Plus, SE, II or later model.
Font Harmony requires some free disk space to operate — in the worst case, it requires about as much free space to Harmonize a file as the file occupies. In other words, you may need at least as much free space on each disk as the size of the largest font file on that disk that you Harmonize. Thus floppy disk users may have to split up large font files with Font/DA Mover before the files can be Harmonized.
Never Harmonize your only copy of a font file; always have a backup copy in case something goes wrong.
